Records & Classifications

A record is a way that a repository can keep track of the information relating to both singular items within the collection and the collection as a whole. The University of Lynchburg uses a record system comprised of groups and sub-groups.

Below is the Collection Guide for the Archive. The main group is the first number and any additional sub-groups and sub-groups of the sub-groups are also assigned their own number. Another way to look at it would be a family tree. There are parent records and child records. For example, The President's Office would be a parent group, while Addresses and Speeches would be a child group. If you wanted to see the Addresses and Speeches Box from the Collection, the R.S (Record System) Number would be 2/1/1.
