What does LGBTQIA+ mean?

LGBTQIA+ is one of many acronyms used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual, non-heteroromantic, or non-cisgender. Other variations of this acronym include LGBT, LGBTQ, or LGBTQ+.

 L = Lesbian
 G = Gay
 B = Bisexual
 T = Transgender

 Q = Queer/Questioning
 I = Intersex
 A = Asexual/Aromantic/Allies

Some of the other identities that are considered to be under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella but not included in the common acronyms include Agender, Nonbinary, Pansexual, Demisexual/Demiromantic, and Polyamorous.

  • Independent Voices
    An open access digital collection of alternative press newspapers, magazines and journals, drawn from the special collections of participating libraries. These periodicals were produced by feminists, dissident GIs, campus radicals, Native Americans, anti-war activists, Black Power advocates, Hispanics, LGBT activists, the extreme right-wing press and alternative literary magazines during the latter half of the 20th century.
